Help with Baby Photo Shoot

Boober's Home Photo Shoot

Boober's Home Photo Shoot

My wife and I have decided we'd like to take Baby J. to a photographer. We want to get some really great pictures for the holidays that we can send to all of our relatives. We did our own quasi-photo shoot one time. We threw down some nice sheets and blankets, dressed up Baby J. in various outfits, took a couple hundred pictures. They came out pretty well, but we want to really do something good this time. So this is less a blog entry and more a questionnaire for parents who have done this before. I'm curious about some things (please leave some comments as answers to my questions if you can):

  1. Where are the best places to go? We're a single income family with a tight holiday budget, so we can't go too overboard. I want to know what places offer quality photos while remaining affordable.
  2. For places that offer digital photos on cd... are the photos on the CDs high quality images or low resolution? If they're low resolution, they're not going to do me a lot of good, but if they're high quality, I could always take the photos to a cheaper printer.
  3. How should we dress Baby J.? We're planning on buying her a really pretty dress. But should we expect a lot of outfit changes?
  4. How long does the process usually take? For anyone out there with kids, I'm sure you know how hard it is to keep a young child, especially a baby, focused for more than 30 seconds at a time. And I'm sure Baby J. will become extremely frustrated with us if this takes a long time.
  5. And finally, is it worth it? Obviously it's more pricey, but do you get something for that? Are we going to be impressed with the kinds of pictures we get when compared with our own digital camera.

Let me know anything else you might have to add!!!

Is she my clone?

A friend of ours had a baby a couple of days ago. She gave birth to a beautiful little girl. Upon visiting them, it wasn't long before someone asked, "Who does she look more like, mom or dad?" Funny enough, it got me thinking about an earlier visit we made to the pediatrician's office; I don't remember the reason for the visit (most likely it was a checkup), but when the nurse came to weigh Baby J. and check her height, she remarked to my wife, "Boy, if we didn't know you gave birth to her, we'd never know she was yours." Then, the nurse went on to say she was my mini-me.

Mommy Back When She Was Little

When I look at my daughter, I see both of us in her. She has my eyes for sure, and she might have my lips. And if you'd asked me a couple months ago, I might have said she definitely looked more like me. But starting just a couple days ago, I'm beginning to suspect she may actually be my wife's clone.

Me in my PJs

I know this happens all the time. When I was little, everyone said I looked like my mom, later on everyone said I looked like my father. I guess our faces change as we get older, certain features become more prominent, and those features are more clearly linked to one of our parents. So what do you think? Take a good look at my baby girl, and a good look at my wife as a young girl. Who does Baby J. take after more?

Nap Time!

Baby J. Napping

Baby J. Napping

Am I the only one who gets frustrated at nap time? Maybe some babies are like clockwork, but Baby J.'s naps are pretty sporadic at best. Some days, she wants three naps. Some days, she wants only one. Some days, she wants a nap right away in the morning, sometimes, it waits until the afternoon. She's perfectly consistent at nighttime, every night at 7pm, she's out, but when it comes to naps, there's no consistency. I guess I shouldn't complain. I know people with older babies than Baby J. who are still struggling with the nighttime routine.

Anyone have any advice on getting their babies to be more consistent with naps?

What’s with nicknames?

My Boober

My Boober

After spending these last 9 months with my beautiful Baby J., I've come to realize that I'm addicted to giving her nicknames. Does everyone do this with their baby? One of my favorite nicknames for her is "Boober". Why Boober? Because I'm a big fan of Fraggle Rock of course. But it doesn't stop there! Some of my better nicknames include:

  • Bubba
  • Junior Jumble
  • Sugar Boots
  • Honey Bunny
  • Baby Bear
  • Pumpkin
  • Punky Monkey (which I should add was the nickname my mother gave me as a child, maybe that's where this all started...)

The reason I bring this up is, I used to worry that all these nicknames would result in a one year old who had no idea what her name was. Somehow, I lucked out, because from an early age she responded to her name.

If anyone out there reads this, let me know some of your favorite nicknames that either you had as a kid or that you've given to your own kids. I'm curious if I'm the only one who overdoes it in the nickname department. I'm also curious if anyone else has ever been called "Punky Monkey".
