My daughter calls me "da da". Or just "dad!" yelled really loudly and quickly sometimes when she needs my attention ASAP. She's been calling me "da da" for awhile, and if you show her a picture, and you say, "Where's daddy?" she knows to point to me. So, it disturbs me that every time she sees a monkey or a chimpanzee or a gorilla or whatever, she points at it and yells, "DA DA!"

Now, do I look like a monkey to you?

Now, be honest.

Every Christmas I try to make my wife one homemade gift. We do stockings for each other, and we buy each other little things we probably don't really need. But on top of that, I like to make something a little more special. This year I drew a picture of Baby J. I framed the picture, and I wrapped it up. We leave little clues on our presents for each other, so we can try to guess before we open them. My clue to her was: Mommy's Little Monkey.

My baby has developed only what I can call a "monster face". She scrunches up her face, squints her eyes, and she makes a weird grunting noise. The face is all the more surprising because of her eight teeth, which have all grown to different lengths so far and look rather jagged and terrifying.

She has decided that whenever we are in public and a stranger smiles at her, she will stand up, turn to them suddenly and deliver the monster face. I was giving her a bottle yesterday, when we were out, and every stranger nice enough to give her a smile received a monster face in response. I kept trying to get her to use her normal, pretty smile, but I guess that's out of the question right now.

I kept wondering, do people think there's something wrong with my baby? She looked like she was totally unhinged. I've tried to show her the monster face she does when she's in front of the mirror, but then she isn't too interested in doing it. I've also imitated her doing the monster face, but that only seems to encourage her. I have no idea if she thinks it's a monster face. If she's trying to scare unsuspecting strangers. Or if maybe in her crazy, baby brain, she thinks she's being nice.

Baby J. had her first Halloween ever tonight. Originally, we had the idea she would be dressed as a lobster, and we'd carry her around in a giant pot. As cute as that idea was, it wasn't practical, and it didn't fit her personality. After thinking about it more, my wife and I both decided that the best costume for Baby J. would be a monkey. She acts like a monkey; she's always climbing everything, crawling and cruising around the house, grunting at people. It was really the best costume we could have come up with.

We went out with a friend and her nephew (who was dressed as a pumpkin) around our neighborhood. Baby J. is much too young to understand the concept of Halloween, and she's too young to eat any candy, but she did enjoy seeing a lot of new faces, and she liked looking at all the interesting costumes people were wearing.

As we walked around seeing all the costumed kiddies and the next-door neighbors, Baby J. was unusually quiet. She was very un-monkeylike. Still, she looked adorable in her costume. And even though a monkey costume on a baby inevitably means everyone will assume she's a boy, it was still the perfect costume for our little one.

I'd like to hear from readers their first costumes or the costumes their kids first wore. I have to confess that for my first Halloween, I was a witch. Not altogether a boy's costume. I don't really remember it, but looking back, I have to wonder what my mom was thinking. I mean, a witch? Really? I wonder if Baby J. will ever look back and wonder what we were thinking making her a monkey.
